Over a 30-year timespan, Wright in Wisconsin, Inc., and predecessor organizations, have facilitated awareness of the architecture, vision, legacy and genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, his apprentices, and fellow architects through our Wright and Like TM home tours across Wisconsin. This year our 2024 Wright and Like TM Racine tour is scheduled for Saturday, September 7th, the weekend following Labor Day.
For 2024, we're pleased to be back in Racine, a city where just the right economic circumstances allowed Frank Lloyd Wright and allied architects to thrive and produce world-famous buildings that we very much appreciate today.
THE WRIGHTS
While in Racine, you will again see an old friend, the Wright-designed 1904-5 Thomas P. Hardy House (photo above, Bill Swan), staffed by those who know it best. Although we won't see the iconic view that resulted in the Japanese-style wood block image of the Hardy House drawn by Marion Mahony that appeared in Wright's Wasmuth Portfolio, we're working with the owner to open some of the private spaces.
We're pleased to again partner with SC Johnson and Son, Inc. who will offer scheduled Wright-centered tours of the National Register Administration Building and Research Tower Building, including spaces seldom open to the public. The SCJ tour will also include Norman Foster's Fortaleza Hall which includes the SC Johnson Gallery: At Home with Frank Lloyd Wright and the Lily Pad gift shop. Ticket holders will be contacted after purchasing tickets to reserve a specific tour time (available at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.)
THE LIKES
This year will be the first time, since our 2004 Racine tour, that we've been able to include Wright apprentice Edgar Tafel's Robert and Rita Albert House on the Racine tour. Tafel was the Taliesin Apprentice who supervised the construction of the SC Johnson Administration Building. The Albert House, although one of Tafel's first Racine houses, is arguably his best, and the one that began his long architectural career (conducted largely from Manhattan, New York).
Those living in Racine will be familiar with the name Hans Geyer, a mid-century modern architect who followed Wright's principles. We have several houses by Geyer on the tour, including the second home he designed for his family, the 1962 Hans and Estelle Geyer House, his 1952 Lester and Sophie Cohen House (remodeled by Racine architect and WiW Board member Ken Dahlin in 2021), and his 1957 Michael and Connie Salvano House.
You may remember two 1952 John Randal McDonald houses from our last Racine tour in 2016, the Robert and Louise Erickson House and the Dr. Joseph and Jeanne Postorino House. Recently their owners removed a fence, trees and shrubbery that obscured a clear view of the physical relationship between these two houses, which Mc Donald purposely sited side-by-side, as shown on a combined plot plan. Both owners have been working to restore the homes since our last visit, and, unlike the 2016 tour, guests will see portions of the interiors of both houses. McDonald, who also followed Wright's principles, had a prolific architectural practice in Racine as well as southern Wisconsin.
Also based on Wrightian principles, is the 1949 Dr. George and Alyce Gillett House by Madison architect William V. Kaeser. Recent owners commissioned Racine architect and WiW Board member Ken Dahlin to remodel and design an addition to this large home on the Lake Michigan shore. Kaeser, a graduate of MIT who studied at Cranbrook under Eliel Saarinen, was known for hiring and working with Wright apprentices.
