How to Enter

Guidelines, Requirements & Submissions

Welcome to the Wright Now Design Competition. Below are the submission requirements and guidelines for participating students.

1. Eligibility & Teams

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Submissions may be from individuals or teams of no more than three (3) participants.
  • Participants must attest that their work is original and completed within the year at a UW campus.
  • Submissions must be accompanied by a letter of support from UW faculty.

2. Design Prompt & Program Requirements

The submission must express your vision of Wright’s organic architecture for the 21st century:

  • Building Type: Single-family residence, maximum 2,500 s.f.
  • Layout: Flexibility in programming and configuring internal spaces (e.g., number of bedrooms, garage/carport, single-story vs. two-story).
  • Location: Must be set in a real location in Wisconsin based on a real survey or online G.I.S. data.
  • Constructability: Materials and systems are at your discretion, but must be of real-world constructability.

3. Required Deliverables

Submissions may be rendered by hand or computer. At your discretion, you may include additional drawings (interior perspectives, additional sections, details, etc.).

The following deliverables must be formatted to print out on one or two 24" x 36" boards (delivered digitally as PDF file(s)):

  1. Site Plan to Scale (1"=20' or 1"=10') showing the real Wisconsin site location.
  2. Floor Plan(s) to Scale (1/8"=1'-0").
  3. Exterior Elevations to Scale (1/8"=1'-0").
  4. Building Section notating structural/construction systems/materials (1/8"=1'-0").
  5. Exterior Perspective.

4. How to Register & Submit

  • Pre-Registration: Please pre-register your interest in participating by emailing Henry St. Maurice at hstmaurice@me.com. Include your name(s), where you reside, and how you learned about the competition.
  • Submission Deadline: Submissions are due via electronic transfer by midnight on Friday, April 4 to hstmaurice@me.com.

5. Judging & Awards

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges affiliated with Wright in Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Architecture, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Cash prizes will be announced on Friday, May 1, and awarded as follows:

  • First Place: $1,500 + one-year complementary membership(s) in WI
  • Second Place: $750 + one-year complementary membership(s)
  • Third Place: $500 + one-year complementary membership(s)
  • Honorable Mention: One-year complementary membership(s)

Note: Award winners' boards will be printed out for display at Wright in Wisconsin's Fall event.
