About Wright in Wisconsin
Wright in Wisconsin is a non-profit corporation created with the assistance of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. Its mission is to promote, protect, and preserve the heritage of Frank Lloyd Wright, his vision, and his architecture, as well as the work of his apprentices, Taliesin Associated Architects, and like-minded architects in his native state of Wisconsin.
What is Organic Architecture?
Submissions must explicitly address Wright’s principles of organic architecture, which is distinct both from traditional architecture and from Modernist architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright defined organic architecture as follows:
“The word ORGANIC denotes in architecture not merely what may hang in a butcher shop, get about on two feet or be cultivated in a field. The word organic refers to entity, perhaps integral or intrinsic would therefore be a better word to use. As originally used in architecture, organic means part-to-whole, as whole-is-to-part. So entity as integral is what is really meant by the word organic.”
