This
is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to get
a fascinating glimpse of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural legacy in
the Delavan Lake, Wisconsin area. The Wright and Like, 2001:Delavan
Lake Tour is sponsored by the Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin Heritage
Tourism Program (FLLW®WHTP). The tour celebrates Wright's birthday
weekend and features a full day of exciting events including interior tours of
private homes and a gala evening boat tour of Delavan Lake aboard the
Lake Lawn Princess (this event is limited to only 40 tickets).
Seldom available for tours, Frank Lloyd
Wright's cluster of summer homes and estates around Delavan Lake
constitute the 2001 Wright and Like tour, with a 1994 Prairie Style
home by Brian Spencer as an added attraction.
The cluster's story began with Henry Wallis, a
Chicago entrepreneur who purchased a large tract on Delavan Lake in
the late 1890's, where he built an estate for himself (which he
quickly sold) between 1897 and 1900, consisting of a boathouse
(virtually unknown), house, and gatehouse. Then came the most famous
group, the Fred B. Jones estate--boathouse, house, gatehouse, and
stables dating between 1900 and 1903. Others included the Lake Delavan
Yacht Club (demolished), the Charles S. Ross Cottage, and the George
W. Spencer Cottage, all in 1902; and the A. P. Johnson House in 1905.
Tour subscribers will see six
Wright buildings plus the Tracy/Schwemm House by Brian A. Spencer, AIA / IAA of Madison.

House, 1902, Frank Lloyd Wright
(exterior walk around only)
Fred B. Jones House, 1901. A famous house, now
restored to its original footprint. Semi-circular porches virtually
surround the house, which has five bedrooms and three fireplaces. The
use of boulders for the masonry elements relates to Wright's Chauncey
Williams House in Forest Park. The foundation for the two-story Wright
boathouse still exists on the lakeshore.
Fred B. Jones Stables, 1903. The adjunct
stables to the house sit behind a wall of boulders. Wright also used
boulders for two small bridges on the property.
Fred B. Jones
Gatehouse, 1903. This property long ago was separated from the
estate, but the present owners acquired it only this year and hope to
restore it and the adjacent greenhouse and water tower to which it is
connected by a porte cochere.
Charles S. Ross Cottage, 1902. A substantial
summer home with four bedrooms and two fireplaces, the Ross Cottage
floor plan is identical to a cottage design for the Little Family of
Wayzata, Minnesota.
Schwemm House, 1994. Like the first dwelling
Wright designed for Delavan Lake, this Prairie Style house was built
as a speculative venture by Gordon Tracy, who sold it to the Schwemm
family.
Architect Brian A. Spencer, AIA / IAA of Madison is a longtime Wright historian and
designer of homes in the Wright tradition.
Henry Wallis House, 1900. This was Wright's
less-elaborate, second, early Prairie Style design for Wallis. It has
been sympathetically restored and landscaped in recent years. Wallis
built the house on speculation and sold it to the Goodsmith Family
before he occupied it. NOTE:
Problems
with construction scheduling may cause this site to be exterior only
or

Henry Wallis Gatehouse, 1901. This site featured fences, plantings, and a
roofline reminiscent of early Wright houses in Oak Park. NOTE:
