Luncheon and Conversation with Pedro E. Guerrero

12 - 1:30 p.m. Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center - Madison
$25 per person - reservations required.

Guerrero was just 22 years old when he landed a job as Wright’s photographer. On that serendipitous day in 1959, Guerrero found his life’s work and a personal and professional relationship with Wright that lasted nearly two decades.

Shortly after he was hired, Guerrero became a member of Wright’s apprentice school for architects, the Taliesin Fellowship. This special entrée enabled him to observe Wright not only in his role as master architect, but also as a father, friend, husband and mentor.

Join Guerrero for lunch and conversation as he discusses his experiences with Wright. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Frank Lloyd Wright® Wisconsin Heritage Tourism Program and Friends of Monona Terrace. Following the luncheon, Guerrero and Wright author Dixie Legler will be available to autograph books in the Monona Terrace Gift Shop An exhibition of Guerrero’s photographs, organized by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letter, is also on display in the convention center.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT® VISITORS CENTER     Frank Lloyd Wright 1955

Visitor Center photo. Place file Visual Materials Archive State Historical Society of Wisconsin

The Frank Lloyd Wright® Visitor Center was originally designed by Wright in 1955 to be a restaurant. In 1957, construction began on the site which previously housed a small store and gas station. Due to Wright’s death in 1959, the project remained uncompleted until the late 1960s. The building was completed by the then Taliesin Associated Architects as the Riverview Terrace Restaurant In 1995, the Taliesin® Preservation Commission purchased the building and converted it into the Frank Lloyd Wright® Visitor Center.

Wyoming Valley Grammar School            Frank Lloyd Wright 1956

Wyoming Valley Grammar School is the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed public school building. Now privately owned, the school is rarely open to the public, built principally of concrete block, the school features two classrooms, a large all-purpose room and a fireplace in the central hallway. Wright-like models designed by students of the UW V/-Milwaukee School of Architecture will be on display.

Unity Chapel                         Joseph Lyman Silsbee 1886

Unity Chapel photo. Howe Co Collection State Historical Society at Wisconsin

This chapel is famous for being one of the first structures associated with Wright, who, it is said, handled the interior design. It was created as a family and community chapel by Wright’s mother’s family (the Lloyd Joneses), and the adjacent cemetery is a resting place for family members and members of the Taliesin Fellowship as well. Guided tours of the cemetery will be conducted by Wright author and scholar Mary Jane Hamilton and Wright educator Mary Ann McKenna.

The Pinery                    James Pfefferkorn 1998

Situated in the pine woods on a point near the Wisconsin River east of Spring Green, the two-story, wooden Pinery is a compact house with magnificent views. Architect James Pfefferkorn conceived the octagonal plan in the 1980s and found a willing client for the design in one of the tour guides at Taliesin.

RATTLESNAKE RIDGE             Robert Graves 1985

Robert Graves created The Glass House at Rattlesnake Ridge with its dramatic views for a couple who lives there and also runs Little Valley Farm, a native plant nursery. Natural prairie and gardens enhance the stone, wood, and glass structure, which like Wright's houses seamlessly blend indoors and outdoors. Graves has spent a lifetime at and around Taliesin, where his father ran the farm.

CASSELL PRAIRIE FARM             John W. Thompson 1860-1900s

Restored prairies, bluffs, stone follies, barns and outbuildings surround the frame farmhouse on the Cassell Prairie Farm. The original farmhouse dates from the 1860s, with an addition from about 1910. Rear living quarters were added in the 1980s. Then in the middle 1990s, Madison architect John Thompson added a traditional-looking entrance and a Wright-style living area, swimming pool and two screened pool houses.
